Giving Team.

Grant Seekers. Develop and coordinate a grant application strategy for DEF. Responsible for identifying suitable grant opportunities and working with the leadership team to write applications. Knowledge of potential grant organizations and grant writing experience preferred. Time commitment is likely to ebb and flow.

Marketing Team.

Director of Marketing. Coordinate unified messaging and information sharing across DEF’s platforms and events. Responsible for working with a team of volunteers to manage DEF’s website, blog, social media, and e-mail newsletter in support of local and national activities. Previous marketing and journalism experience are highly desired, as is a willingness to learn how to use Trello, Slack, and Google Docs. Time commitment is at least 10 hours per week.

Social Media Managers. Engage the DEF and national security communities on a variety of social media platforms. Responsible for working as part of marketing team by using Facebook, Twitter, and LinkedIn to provide information to a diverse network. Familiarity with Buffer, live video, and other interactive elements is a plus. Time commitment is 5-10 hours per week.

Graphic Designers. Provide visual design support. Responsible for working with the marketing team to create routine images for local events and periodic regional conferences, and for supporting development efforts as the marketing team evolves. No experience required, but an eye for aesthetics is appreciated. Time commitment may vary, but is likely no more than 1-3 hours per week.

Business Operations Team.

Webmaster. Manage DEF’s .org webpage. Responsible for synching efforts across the leadership team. Experience with WordPress, CRM usage, and website interface is helpful. After an initial month of 4-5 hours per week, the time commitment is 2-3 hours per week.

National Programs Team.

Firestarter Fellowship Director. Support and shape the aspirations of aspiring defense innovators. Responsible for recruiting and selecting fellows, providing opportunities and tools, and working with the marketing team to communicate their ideas to the DEF community. Experience as a program manager and mentor is helpful. Time commitment is 2-5 hours per week.

DEFx Director. Support and coordinate DEFx events. Responsible for supporting individual DEFx managers and deconflicting DEFx events. Program management, logistics, and networking skills are helpful. Time commitment is 2-5 hours per week.

External Engagements Team.

Partnership & Sponsorship Team. Develop and help execute plans to work with DEF’s partners and sponsors. Responsible for working to establish goals, objectives, and engagement priorities, then conducting engagements alongside the External Engagement Team, Executive Director and Director of External Engagement. Responsible for maintaining an understanding of DEF’s contributions to and relationships in the national security community. Relationship management experience appreciated, but not required. Time commitment is a maximum of 3-4 hours per week.

Hill Engagement Team. Develop and help execute a plan to engage and inform Congress about DEF. Responsible for working to establish goals, objectives, and engagement priorities, then conducting engagements alongside the Hill Engagement Team, Executive Director and Director of External Engagement. Responsible for ensuring DEF activities with Congress do not cross into lobbying efforts and educating others on the limits of engagement versus lobbying. No Congressional experience required. Time commitment is a maximum of 3-4 hours per week.

Community Development Team.

Topic Trailblazers. Engage and guide the DEF community and the broader national security community through a dialogue about a specific subject. Trailblazers will use a variety of digital for a to engage the community. Familiarity with or interest in subjects like artificial intelligence, additive manufacturing, talent management, and others is needed. Training on different platforms is available. Time commitment is 2-3 hours per week.

Community Champions. Help bring new DEF members into the community. Responsible for welcoming new members into digital fora and determining how DEF can support them. No specific knowledge or background is required. Time commitment is 2-3 hours per week.

Agora Strategists. Support monthly event planners and community strategy. Responsible for identifying trends and topics of interest, recommending improved or new mechanisms for supporting the DEF community, and building connections to entrepreneurs, academia, and national security elements in diverse environments. Familiarity with Slack, Google Docs, and Trello is ideal, but training is available. Time commitment is 1-2 hours per week.
